❓ Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know
before you start

All the answers expats and international students ask before booking their first driving lesson in The Hague.

Foreign licence

Your licence from abroad

It depends on where your licence is from. EU/EEA licences (Germany, France, UK, etc.) are generally valid and can often be exchanged directly without taking a new exam. Non-EU licences (USA, India, Australia, Turkey, etc.) are only valid for a limited period after you register in the Netherlands β€” after that, you need a Dutch driving licence. Not sure what applies to you? Send me a WhatsApp and I'll tell you exactly.
For most non-EU licences, the process is:
  • Register at your municipality (gemeente) in the Netherlands
  • Get a Dutch BSN number
  • Apply for a Dutch driving licence via CBR (the Dutch driving authority)
  • Pass a practical driving exam β€” no theory exam required if you already hold a foreign licence
I guide you through the entire process and make sure you're fully prepared for the practical exam.
Most experienced drivers need between 5 and 15 lessons to adapt to Dutch roads and traffic rules. It depends on your experience level and how different Dutch traffic is from what you're used to. I always start with a personal assessment lesson so I can give you an honest estimate β€” no unnecessary lessons, no wasted money.
After Brexit, UK licences are treated as non-EU licences in the Netherlands. This means your UK licence is valid for a limited time after you register here, after which you need to obtain a Dutch licence. I help many British expats in The Hague with this process β€” just send me a message and I'll explain what you need.
With a US licence, you'll need to pass the Dutch practical driving exam. The good news: no theory exam is required. I specialise in helping American expats adapt to Dutch roads β€” roundabouts, right-of-way rules, and the differences in motorway driving. Most US drivers are exam-ready within 5 to 10 lessons.

Lessons & scheduling

How lessons work

All lessons at Safe4all are taught in a manual transmission car (Volkswagen Polo). This means you will learn to drive with a clutch and gearstick. The advantage: a Dutch manual licence also allows you to drive automatic cars β€” so you get the most out of your licence. If you specifically need automatic-only lessons, please contact me to discuss.
Yes β€” fully in English, no Dutch required. I also teach in Dutch and Turkish, but for English-speaking students everything is in English from start to finish. No language barrier, no misunderstandings β€” you focus on driving.
A standard lesson is 60 minutes. The easiest way to book is via WhatsApp β€” just send me a message and I'll get back to you quickly to plan your first lesson. I'm flexible with timing: mornings, evenings and weekends are all available.
Yes. I pick you up at your home address and drop you off after the lesson. This service is available throughout The Hague, Voorburg, Delft, Rijswijk, Leidschendam, Wateringen, Nootdorp and surrounding areas. No need to travel to a driving school.
We drive in a Volkswagen Polo β€” a modern, comfortable car that's well-suited for learning. You also take your practical exam in this car, so you'll be completely familiar with it by exam day.
You can cancel or reschedule any lesson without cost, as long as you notify me at least 24 hours in advance. In case of genuine emergencies (illness, urgent family matters), we always find a solution together. Flexibility is important to me.
Yes, always. You work with me — Aytaç — from your first lesson to your exam. Consistency matters for building confidence and making real progress. You won't be passed around between instructors.

The Dutch driving exam

Passing your Dutch driving test

The practical exam is done mostly in silence β€” the examiner gives simple directions which I fully prepare you for. You don't need to speak Dutch to pass. The theory exam is available online in English, so that's no barrier either.
Around 60% of my students pass on their first attempt β€” higher than the national average. This is the result of thorough preparation, honest feedback, and making sure students only sit the exam when they're truly ready.
No problem β€” we analyse exactly what went wrong, work on those specific points, and book a re-exam. Most packages include a re-exam at no extra cost. Failing once doesn't mean anything β€” some of my most confident students took two or three attempts.
Yes, I handle the full process: authorising the driving school, health declaration, exam booking and everything else. You don't need to navigate Dutch bureaucracy alone β€” I take care of it.
Yes, frequently. Mock exams are one of the best ways to build confidence and spot any remaining weak points before the real thing. I treat them exactly like the real exam so there are no surprises on the day.

Exam anxiety & nerves

Nervous behind the wheel?

Absolutely. Exam anxiety is very common and something I work with regularly. My approach is calm, patient and without pressure. We build your confidence step by step β€” familiar routes, clear expectations and lots of practice. Many of my students with exam anxiety pass on their first or second attempt.
Yes β€” always. I've helped students who had failed 10+ times. When we understand exactly why someone keeps failing, we can fix it. It's usually not a skill problem β€” it's a confidence or preparation problem. That's exactly what I specialise in.
